This trade follows the previous moves of Fox joining the Spurs and Lavine moving to replace him in Sacramento. Both Sissoko and Denver's second-round picks sent to Washington were acquired through this three-team deal. More importantly, by trading Huerter to Chicago, it allowed the Kings to absorb Valanciunas' salary without worrying about luxury tax issues.
The Kings opted not to use their financial flexibility for Tre Jones’ contract (who was traded from Fox’s move), indicating they prioritize strengthening their frontcourt over finding a traditional point guard replacement for Fox. With players like LaVine, Monk, DeRozan, and rookie Devin Carter on board, Sacramento has ample ball-handlers but lacks size off the bench.
Valanciunas stands at 2.11 meters tall and weighs 120 kilograms—his physical presence is undeniable. Previously, Sacramentos mainly used Trey Lyles (standing at 2.06m) as Sabonis' backup center; however, Lyles is primarily a power forward himself. Valanciunas will be better equipped to handle larger opponents while allowing interim head coach Doug Christie more leeway with Lyles playing his natural position.
Though we view Valanciunas chiefly as a low-post scorer or offensive rebounder option he has also performed well rolling after screens during pick-and-roll plays according to tracking data from Second Spectrum; only six centers have executed more ball-screen actions than him over past six seasons—including Sabonis himself.
I’m curious whether Coach Christie might consider having both Sabonis & Valanciunass share minutes together since these two previously started alongside each other representing Lithuania national team most recently during EuroBasket tournament back in summer '22 where they averaged combined totals reaching impressive heights namely around averaging daily contributions summing up roughly close enough towards achieving figures resembling approximately scoring avg total near ~28-29 Pts +~17 Rbs per game collectively!
