This trade seems more like a financial maneuver disguised as a basketball deal. By trading away Middleton's $31.7 million salary for Kuzma's $23.5 million (along with part of his 15% trade bonus), the Bucks have significantly reduced their luxury tax bill by nearly $30 million this season and avoided crossing the second luxury tax apron.
The calculation related to avoiding this second apron could benefit Milwaukee in their playoff pursuits this season, according to ESPN reporter Bobby Marks, who noted that it requires Kuzma to waive some of his traded player exception money so that the Bucks remain just below the restricted second luxury tax threshold.
If they don’t take back more salary than they send out in trades, they'll be able to package contracts freely and still have time through another transaction to replace Middleton’s playmaking abilities.
This move feels like an admission from the Bucks that currently, they're not positioned well enough for a championship run unless something shifts dramatically—either securing Middleton’s full health or using him as leverage for acquiring another star player; both options now appear off the table.
